Bakuchiol is a plant-derived active (from babchi seeds) that has been studied head-to-head with retinol for smoothing fine lines and evening tone, with markedly less irritation. It is not chemically a retinoid — which is precisely the point: similar goals, gentler road.
It is gentle enough for nightly use from the start — no ramp-up schedule needed, unlike retinol. Apply 3–4 drops to clean, dry skin at night and follow with a moisturiser or barrier cream.
Purging is far less common with bakuchiol because it does not accelerate cell turnover as aggressively as retinoids. Most users experience none. If your skin is very reactive, start three nights a week and build up.
Bakuchiol is oil-soluble, so an anhydrous squalane-rosehip base keeps it fully dissolved and stable — and needs no preservatives. The texture is a light, fast-absorbing serum-oil, not a heavy facial oil.
